Nancy Abens Artworks | Vision of Loss
My elderly mom lives in a little house in my backyard. She started losing her eyesight from glaucoma and various other eye problems several years ago. She also has dementia. I wanted to explore the idea of loss by trying to make images that represent both how she is seeing and how her memories are leaving her. Mom said she still sees lots of colors and both cloudy and sparkling lights. Parts of her vision are disintegrating or completely gone. I also started working with images that relate to a loss of memory. I see many of the black and white pieces illustrating that. I think they are very dreamlike with objects and forms just out of reach similar to how my mom's mind works around language and memories. These are all works in progress. I am not sure right now where they are going.
